POLICY GUIDLINES • Every year, the CSSPS Secretariat processes the results of three categories of students for Selection and Placement. • Category 1 : Qualified candidates who completed that academic year. • Category 2 : Re-entry Candidates who completed 3 years back (2014 will be 2011-2013) • Category 3 : Foreign Students (Ghanaians & Non- Ghanaians) who Schooled Abroad.
Guidelines for 2014 • Second Cycle Schools grouped into OPTIONS : • Public SHS : Three (3) groups namely options 3, 2 & 1 • Public Tech/Voc Inst. : option 4 • Approved Private Schools ( Both SHS & Tech/Voc): option 5
Conditions for selection of Schools • Candidates : • Must Choose 4 schools (1st -4th choice) with corresponding programmes • Must not choose one school twice • May select all choices from option 1 • Should not select more than 2 schools from option 2
Conditions for selection of Schools (contd) • Cannot choose more than 1 school in option 3 • Candidates who desire to pursue purely Tech/Voc programmes may select all choices from option 4 • Candidates have the liberty to select all choices from a mix of options 1, 2, 3 ,4 & 5 • Choice of schools from a combination of regions allowed.
PLACEMENT CRITERIA Placement is based on six subjects A minimum of six (6) subjects are used for all candidates for the selection. This comprises four(4) coresubjects and two (2) best subjects. The Core Subjects are i. For SHS/TI English Language Mathematics Integrated Science Social Studies/Building Technology ii. Two other best subjects The two (2)other best subjects are selected from the rest of the BECE subjects.
PLACEMENT PROCESS • All candidates choosing one particular school are arranged in the order of merit. • Available vacancy for each programme declared by head of SHS/TI determines the cut-off point
POLICY GUIDELINES (Placement Procedure) • Six (6) Subjects used for selection & placement • Raw scores of candidates are used. • Placement On Merit • School And Programme Options Linked • Key Subjects Used In The Event Of A Tie. (English, Mathematics, Int. Science & Social Studies in that order)
Guidelines • Qualification is the current minimum pass mark. • Optional and reserved for candidates who wish to take advantage of it. • To qualify for selection, candidates must have attended JHS in the catchment area

Major Challenges (contd.) • Non-Acceptance of placement results: Schools placed • Inaccurate data provided by candidates during registration by WAEC • Lack of parent’s participation in the registration of wards • Choice of school without reference to parent’s financial preparedness • Choice of school without reference to availability of boarding facilities & programme
Strategies to Resolve Challenges/Way Forward THE ROLE OF CSSPS SECRETARIAT • Introduction of school digest to advertise all SHS/TI • Continuous & Intensive public Education. • Documentary on CSSPS • Flyers (updated)
Strategies to Resolve Challenges/Way Forward • THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER / COUNSELLOR • Help the students to complete the selection and placement forms correctly. • Assist students to identify their interest and capabilities in order to select a course they can perform best.
Teachers / counsellor should provide current, adequate and useful information with regards to the selection of schools and courses. • Teachers / counsellor should have a consensus meeting involving parents and students during the registration process.
Teachers / counsellor should keep accurate and true records of students and students’ performance.
THE ROLE OF THE STUDENTS • Students are required to write all subjects to qualify for selection and placement • Is the duty of the student to learn hard to qualify for selection since placement is purely on merit and no other consideration.
Students should provide accurate information about themselves to the school authorities. • Students should encourage parents to collaborate with school authorities in the choice of schools and courses.
Students should refrain from selecting the schools themselves and the habit of peer influence. • Students should refrain from all kinds of examination malpractices.
THE ROLE OF PARENTS • Parents should give the right information when filling the selection and placement forms • Parents should cooperate with school authorities during the registration process.
Parents should know that the choice their wards make today will determine their future • Parents should provide the necessary learning materials for their wards in order to perform well.
