  1. The Growth of Tourism Get in while you can!

  2. Why Study this Growth? 1960 – International Tourist Arrivals 69, 296, 000 people 2005 – International Tourist Arrivals 729, 858, 000 people + 953%

  3. The Questions is … Why? Transportation; Money; Demographics; Politics; Evolution of Tourism; Special Events.

  4. Transportation This is the largest contributor to the growth of tourism – WHY? Trains; Ships; Cars; AIR TRAVEL!

  5. Money People are generally making more money today than they did years ago;

  6. Demographics The growth of tourism really began in the last ¼ century of the 20th century; During this time, the BABY BOOMERS moved into the 30 – 60 year old cohort; Desire to give a better life to family than their post-war parents were able to; Resulted in making more $ and having disposable income.

  7. Politics Changes in Governmental policy can result in easier access into some countries; Countries will sometimes merge or split to appease relations. Example: East and West Germany united and the Berlin Wall came down, opening a huge new market for tourism

  8. Evolution of Tourism New and evolving types of tourism appeal to new, untapped tourist markets; Example: Ecotourism appeals to those who want to travel but also value the preservation of local environments and cultures.

  9. Special Events Every so often, an event will draw more tourists to a region than is normal; Examples include Olympics, World Cup (South Africa, recently), Papal visits; Often, these events will leave a legacy, usually in the form of infrastructure, that will continue to draw tourists after the event is complete.

  10. Group Work Copy the figure on the next page into your notes; In groups of 3 or 4, you are going to complete the diagram by filling in as many industries related to tourism. These industries have grown at the same rate (and sometimes faster) as the tourism industry as a result of the MULTIPLIER EFFECT (we will discuss this term later). For 3 of them, try to come up with actual jobs that relate to the industry. See the example for help. GOOD LUCK!
