  2. Into the Woods • Tourism has been an industry in Nova Scotia since the 1870s • Early Nova Scotia tourism was targeted at sportsmen and focused on hunting and fishing.

  3. Who were the Tourists? • Members of the British military stationed in the province • They had time on their hands and money to spend. • Interested in hunting and fishing.

Hunting and Fishing became big business. • By 1900 Nova Scotia became the choice wilderness destination for the British military. • Many aboriginal peoples in Nova Scotia were hired as guides and woodsmen to lead the ‘tourists’ into the wilderness. • Guides were active in Annapolis and Digby counties
