Highlights from Ashwani Kumar, UT starcom“Evolution of NGN infrastructure for Multi-media applications & FMC” • Highlighted the evolution of User centric services approach from a network centric services approach • Brought out the need for Convergence at all levels such as networks, services and terminals • Expressed views on NGN converged system topology and advanced services architecture topology • Highlighted the usefulness of smart embedded soft phone on user device and how Unified Centrex enables enterprise access • Mentioned what are the FMC business drivers, its advantages and end user benefits • Explained how a video call can be made while watching IP-TV at home and how such seamless services can be provided in an NGN network • Shared a case study experience of PSTN to NGN migration in India
Highlights from Pradeep De Almeida, Dialog“Real time data streaming - the next generation” • Presentation covered applications such as mobile TV & LBS • Expressed the need for convergence at all layers • Shared the views on challenges faced in streaming content in mobile devices in core and access networks and what were Dialog group’s experience in Sri Lanka in this area • Brought out salient points of unicast, multicast and broadcast • Highlighted in-band and out-of-band transmission issues • Explained choice of technology such as unicast, MBMS and DVB, types of applications and their pros & cons • Covered MBMS evolution to 3G and LTE • Covered interactivity in DVB-H • Compared different media broadcast technologies • Security issues covering service purchase and protection, also merits of device based and SIM card based • Expressed need for standardization for global interoperability and right selection of technology mix by the operator

Dye, BT“21 CN network of BT ” • Shared overview on 21 CN network of BT and raised questions on need for NGN and how it currently measure up? • Informed about the changing profile of a telco in the present reducing traditional markets and growth in new markets • Highlighted BT’s new ways to providing service – connecting at an emotional level with consumers by providing services that they need and how to be smarter than the competition • Emphasized NGN is not just a technology but how it helps operators to adopt new models to become a business operator • Mentioned about overall cost savings in NGN deployment, to offer better customer service, making them more competitive • Stressed on the importance of open layered platforms. • Highlighted concept to market, lead to cash and trouble to restore ways • Shared information on 21 CN Service creation framework • Importance of application intelligence controlling network resources • Shared the progress made on 21CN and lessons learnt • Concluded with 21 CN view in to future, business process utility
Conclusions / Recommendations • It became quite evident that new services over the NGN brings distinct advantages to operators as well as end consumers. • It is not only significant cost savings for the operators to implement NGN, but also provides new revenue opportunities and makes them a business operator • There are many challenges in bringing streaming services over the wireless networks for consumers • The right selection of the mix of technology and the technology partner by the operator is vital for the success of NGN deployment and an end-to-end approach is necessary • End-to-end convergence at all network layers is a must • Fixed Mobile convergence and flat IP architecture are building blocks for this convergence approach • There is a dire need for standardization for Global interoperability and 3rd party open applications interface • Security issues covering service purchase and protection needs strengthening for a successful NGN service offering
