Big Topics This Year • Business Continuity for Surviving the Coming Pandemic Flu • Not a question of “if” but only a question of “when” • Good News: 98% of the world’s population will live • That means that 2% will perish. This is HUGE • 131 Million worldwide • 6 Million US Citizens (based on population 9/1/2006) • At any given time, 20-40% of workforce will be disabled by illness, or need to give care to family members • Police, teachers, medical profession, food suppliers, transportation workers, government workers, etc.

Big Topics This Year • SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) • These software applications manage vital control systems that manage live or death processes, such as • Chemical Manufacturing systems • Train Switching system • Water Treatment systems • Traffic Control systems • Power Plants • No longer isolated from the Internet - - potential hacking targets • Can be exploited – Will be demonstrated by INL at October meeting.

Big Topics This Year • BotNets • Used by organized crime • Can mail millions of fraudulent e-mails (phishing) • Can create Distributed Denial of Service Attacks • Extortion: “Pay our demand, or we’ll shut you down” • Are assembled and sold to perpetrators • Can distribute viruses, spyware, spam • Difficult to locate the criminal – offers anonymity

  6. What is InfraGard? • Started in 1996 in Cleveland, Ohio to assist the FBI with Cyber Investigations. • In 1998 became a national program • Assigned to FBI Cyber Division in 2003 • Today InfraGard is 16,000 members strong, and growing

  7. Mission Statement • It is our goal to improve and extend information sharing between private industry and the government, particularly the FBI, when it comes to critical national infrastructures

  8. What is a Critical Infrastructure? • “….physical and cyber-based systems essential to the minimum operations of the economy and government” • “…so vital, that their incapacity or destruction would have a debilitating impact on the defense or economic security of the United States.”

West Virginia Member’s Alliance • Local Chapters are called IMA’s • West Virginina Chapter started in 2003 • WV IMA Incorporated 501-C3; Not for Profit • Currently have around 50 secured members • Applicants are vetted with an FBI background check • Meetings Spring and Fall (at this time) • Fairmont in Spring; Charleston in Fall
