A Key Aim of the First Page must be to Engage the Reader • How do these first pages achieve this? • Evocative description? • Interesting characters? • Plunging us into the scene? • Inviting us to ask questions? • Consider the authors’ use of the following possible elements, in addition to others you notice: Conflicts, Contrasts, Questions, Shocks/Surprises, In Medias Res, Foreshadowing…
