A World of digital DISRUPTION …and how we can get the skills to survive RhidianDafydd, Faye Hannah, Saint John Walker Creative Skillset
What does our new disrupted • world look like in the UK? • Media usage accounts for more than 60% of time spent in leisure activities across Europe; • The Internet has driven consumption levels of creative products to record levels (+20 percent from 2004 to 2011 for the EU-27). • U.K. media usage was among the most dynamic of the EU-27 countries with an increase of over 30 percent. • New consumer experiences are being created and effectively monetized.
We are spending more time on creative products All growth in the creative industries is driven by digital media (an additional 30 billion euros in revenue in 2011 from 2001) “In our survey of experts, nearly 100% of the respondents agreed that consumers use more creative content today than ever before and that they gain access to more relevant content as a result of digitization”. Booz and Co, 2013
We are increasing revenue against the tide
“A new ecosystem architecture is emerging and presenting great opportunities. At the heart of the most successful business models is a seamless consumer experience, increasingly realized by new market entrants or involving their partnerships with incumbents”.
This constant disruption changes the skills we need and how we can get them
The Challenge 66% of employers are dissatisfied with the digital skills of their workforce 85-90% of jobs will require ICT skills by 2020 132,000 estimated new jobs to be created around Big Data between 2012-2017. Only 35% of British are using internet for learning. Figures: Go ON UK/ e-skills
Let’s talk Fusion!
We need a Fusion of Skills Employers are looking for an intermix of Creativity, Technology and Entrepreneurialism As Creativity and Technology combine in hybrid ways, new business, intrapreneurial and entrepreneurial skills are needed to leverage and exploit the possibilities
Fusion of Skills “If the UK’s creative businesses want to thrive in the digital future, you need people who understand all facets of it integrated from the very beginning…bring engineers into your company at all levels, including the top.” “You need to bring art and science back together.” Eric Schmidt, Chair of Google, MacTaggart Lecture, Edinburgh TV Festival, 27 August 2011.
Fusion of Skills “The fusion of technology with the creative and digital industries is as vital to the UK’s economic growth as that of science, engineering and manufacturing” The Fuse – Igniting High Growth for Creative, Digital and IT Industries in the UK, Council for Industry and Higher Education, 2011.
Fusion of Skills The lack of application of STEM skills to creative subjects, and vice versa, leads to these two crucial skill sets for a digital economy being viewed and developed on parallel tracks.
