History & Scope of Observance • First nationwide event was held April 2010 • The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of prescription medications

Sharing A Strong Message • WHY DOES SAFE DRUG DISPOSAL MATTER? • Accidental drug overdose is one of the most common sources of household injury. • Prescription drugs – especially controlled substances, such as pain medications – can be intentionally misused to get high. • Drug use by teens is especially concerning as it can lead to the development of a chronic substance use disorder. • Expired drugs may not only be ineffective, they can be harmful to the user. • Sharing medicines can lead to dangerous health consequences. • Most incidents of prescription and OTC medication theft are committed by someone the victim knows well and who has open access to the home. • 15% of Mercer County Youth said they have used a prescription drug that was not theirs. *Please see attached sample for reference

Call To Action • Awareness and Education of the importance of disposing unused and outdated prescription medication • 1 week – share information, 1 month – dispose of unused and outdated medication, 6 months – the amount of prescription drugs disposed of increases by 10% • The more we are in the public and showing the community what we are doing and how it is helping will hopefully encourage people to join us
