PILOT CURRICULAR PROJECT • 2 groups of 12 students each • 2 unembalmedcadavers • 2-hour lab • Developed laboratory protocol
RESEARCH QUESTION Does exposure of first year medical students to an unembalmed, partially dissected cadaver increase their appreciation of the natural relationship of organs in the neck, thorax, abdomen and pelvis?
RATIONALE OF THE STUDY • Modify laboratory protocol • Evaluate usefulness of fresh tissue study • Elicit reaction to death
LITERATURE REVIEW • Teaching Gross Anatomy Using Living Tissue, Hubbell et al, Clinical Anat, 15:157-159, 2002. • The New Face of Gross Anatomy, Reidenberg & Latman, New Anat, 269:81-88, 2002. • Using Fresh Tissue Dissection to Teach Human Anatomy in the Clinical Years, A. FRESH TISSUE LABSENHANCED FORMAT • From one to two fresh tissue labs • Incorporate relevant clinical procedures: • Insert a Swan-Ganz catheter • Demonstrate cardiac biopsy procedure • Insert endotracheal tube • Female pelvic exam • Male GU exam
NEW DIRECTIONFORANATOMYATUCLA • Enhance the study of anatomy with less timefor instruction • Increased clinical content • Integration with radiology • Provide a more interactive learning experience • Guided prosection exercises • Interactive materials that engage the students
