Calibration of IVS Course and Common Core State Standards (CCSS) • Illinois implementation timeline for CCSS • Math and ELA curriculum alignment ready for Fall 2012 (FY13) implementation. • IVS launched a new initiative to take an in-depth review of ELA and Math courses. • Timeline was established to ensure recommended revisions were ready for Fall 2012. • Need CCSS expertise from the field - Jan Leonard CCSS Readiness

Common Core Standards Lens – Reading for Literature Key Ideas and Details Cite strong and textual evidence to support of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from text. Determine the theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. Analyze how complex characters develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters and advance the plot or develop the theme. CCSS Readiness
Common Core Standards Lens – Reading for Literature • Craft and Structure • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in • the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone. • Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text , order events within it, and manipulate time. Our Process – Recruit the Review Team • Four teams of two • Each team – one content expert, one IVS staff member • Prerequisite knowledge • Common Core Standards • Common Core ELA Appendices • Conceptual understanding of learning targets CCSS Readiness
Our Process – Schedule and Implement the Reviews • Four full days together – face to face and through Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) • First day introduction and group review of a module in one of the courses • Group interaction when needed • End of day debriefing CCSS Readiness
Our Process – Aggregate the Results and Determine Next Steps • IVS Curriculum Coordinator created an aggregate of the results of the review • Dissemination to IVS administrative staff • Determine next steps – update current courses in house/and or purchase content. CCSS Readiness
