Roller Coaster History • The first roller coasters were created in Russia in the 1600’s. People rode down ice slides on sleds made from wood or ice. The sleds were slowed at the bottom with sand. These were not very safe. • American Roller Coaster began at the end of the 19th century when railroad companies set up amusement parks at the end of the line to increase business. • Disneyland was the first theme park opened in 1955 and The Matterhorn was the first coaster made of wood.
Roller Coaster Physics • Roller Coasters rely on kinetic and potential energy. • Potential energy is the energy stored up as the roller coaster climbs up the first hill. This energy is transferred to Kinetic energy which is the energy of speed.
