  2. Definition • Historical fiction tells a story that is set in the past. • Setting is usually real and drawn from history.

  3. Set in History • The story takes place during a notable period history. • Usually occurs during a significant event in that period • Often presents actual events from the point of view of fictional characters

  4. Both Real and Fiction… • These stories might contain actual historical persons, but the main characters tend to be fictional.

  5. Point of View • These fictional characters usually either observe or actively participate in these historical events.

  6. Capturing History • The author pens a fictional story but attempts to capture the elements of the time presented in the story such as: • Manners • Social conditions • Living conditions

  7. Where to Find Historical Fiction • Found in: • Books • Magazines • Art • TV programs • Cinema • Video games

  8. The novel “Copper Sun” is an example of historical fiction.

  9. “Copper Sun” • In this novel, the main character, Amari, is fictional, but the events that she experiences really occurred in history. • Amari was a member of an African tribe who was captured and enslaved.

  10. “Copper Sun” cont. • The story is based on actual events and reflects how slavery really was during that time. • Shows us things such as how slaves were captured, taken on slave ships, sold at auctions, etc.
