  1. The New Face of America: Targeting Student Misconceptions to Change Attitudes Activity 1:The Face of America Project developed by Cheryl McDaniel & Tracy Trimpe Spring 2010

  2. What is the “Face of America”? • How many different "races" of people are there in America ? • What percentage of the American population would be in each race? • Where can we find information about the people living in America?

  3. Exploring the Data • During this activity, your group will develop an Excel spreadsheet using data from the 1990 and 2000 Census. Each group will use the data to create a graph that best illustrates the information. • Before we go to the computer lab, complete the chart on your worksheet using the data provided in the handouts. • Ready? Let’s go explore the data …

  4. Analyzing the Data • Were you surprised by the results taken from the census reports? • How did the data compare to your predictions? • How did the data change from 1990 to 2000? • What kinds of changes can we expect to see from the census being taken right now? • How does the national data compare to our state and/or community data?

  5. Think About It Respond to the prompt provided in your journal. Knowing that the “Face of America” is changing, what does that mean for you? How will this affect you?
