  2. A test of 2 interfaces • Self rating of Expertise for Library Online Searches • Human Subjects Consent Form • Data sheet for data collector • Data Sheet for Subject • Introduction • subjects will leave the room 2

  3. Self-rating and consent form 3

  4. Data/instructions for data collector 4

  5. Data sheet for subject 5

  6. After collecting the data • run sample data previously collected using SAS • break • meet in LT-H after break • discuss hypotheses (with all students present) • consider how to analyze the data • consider the objectives of the data collection effort 6

  7. Getting data for class demo (7 teams) • team # • odd begin w/www • even begin w/dos

  8. Start point

  9. Sample data (9 teams) • Go to 552 homepage http://iesu5.ieem.ust.hk/dfaculty/duffy/552/index.html • download sample program and data (note the instructions) - used to illustrate SAS

  10. some SAS commands you need • need a data file (example.txt) and a program file (example.sas) • make sure the extensions are correct and that the location of the data file is correctly noted in the program • call program steps into Editor (open file) • submit (or F8) • see listing of output (or F7) • check log output (for error checking) F6 • save and print files as needed • clear active window (Ctrl E) 8

  11. For assumptions of analyses/output • see Cody and Smith or other Statistics references • for help with syntax (error checking) • see help menus 9

  12. Interpretation of results • What do I expect from the results/data? • What is the objective of the testing? • What are the hypotheses? • What questions am I trying to answer with the data/analyses? • H.1. www search is faster. • H.2. More errors using www search. • H.3. More data can be found by www. • Objective: Compare 2 interfaces. 11

  13. Sample SAS screen 12

  14. Sample SAS output/results 13

  15. What to look for in analysis 14

  16. For next week • 1. Read Chapt. 6 (Eberts p.126-138) (wk7) • 2. Read Miller & Stanney IJHCI, 1997 • 3. Submit interpretation of results (email or fax) • H.1. www search is faster. • H.2. More errors using www search. • H.3. More data can be found by www. • Hwk. Agree/disagree, why? (answer all 3) • use results of the sample data (teams 1-9) to draw conclusions…assume similar method was used to get the sample data used for the SAS analysis…up to 1 page summary • hint : see Chapter 6 Cody and Smith (p.138-149) 16

  17. Install SAS for Win95 & Update the License • ===================== • 1. Start --> Run --> • 2. Click Browse • k:\Apps\SAS612\setup • 3. Follow the default instruction • 4.
