  3. Vision Statement • To develop a Catholic Education Network (CathEdNet) in Western Australia that will: • Support teaching and learning • Provide secure communication services • Have a high degree of flexibility, and • Provide equitable access.

CathEdNet established in 2002 The CathEdNet virtual private network (VPN) provides: • Broadband - Fast Speed Access - Metro Schools (optic fibre -10Mb, copper 2Mb) - 112 schools - Regional Schools (optic fibre - 2Mb, copper 1Mb) - 43 schools - Desert schools (satellite 512k/128k) - 9 schools Optic fibre is scalable up to 1Gb, copper is scalable up to 4Mb, satellite is currently scalable to 800k/128k. We are investigating the use of Next G and WAN acceleration technologies for the satellite schools to improve traffic congestion. • Free local & STD calls with analogue or VoIP within the VPN (it is a data and communication package/VPN) • Free download costs once sites are cached within the VPN • Connectivity, enables collaboration and the formation of partnerships and resource sharing to occur between schools and Notre Dame

CathEdNet • Remote Access Access to staff work stations and the school database (anytime, anywhere- via a broadband connection) • Staff Messenger Service • Editure mysuite - which includes SINA, mydesktop, myclasses, myportfolio, mymail products • Access to the TLF objects via myclasses • Britannica Online Home Edition product • myMART web based reporting for Primary Schools • Centra desktop Video conferencing protocols

  6. BUSH SCHOOLS’ NETWORK The Bush Schools Network is another layer to CathEdNet Ninety (90) schools participating in the project a network of people rather than a physical network like CathEdNet. The purpose of BSN is to provide advice on ICT Infrastructure, and to help schools achieve a standard ICT environment This project is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Clever Networks program.

  7. $1M is available from the Australian Government under the Clever Networks program to spend upgrading school LANs to bring them up to industry standard. • For schools who have adequate ICT support, we are issuing them with LAN Management software to give them greater control over their network. • For schools with no ICT support we offer the same tools and a helpdesk which can interact over CathEdNet or a VPN connection to give the school real time support … in other words we can fix in up online.

Staff Messaging System • Separate system to the Editure Mymail which is used mainly for students • McFee Anti Virus software is used • Centralised service though schools can take control and some have their own back-up mail server • System wide address book • Accessible from any Internet browser or a full Outlook client within the network

  12. Mysuite of products includes: We are presently working with Editure to develop a new product called Huxley which will incorporate the best of mysuite and leverage the power of new emerging technologies to replace mysuite by the end of 2009.

The SINA suite enables schools to: • createaccounts: (Internet and email) ; • control, filter and monitor Internet use; • cost manage the school’s Internet connection; • publish and share content between school users; • allocate web space; • manage the school domain and web pages. • Schools can access the software from any Internet connected computer.

  15. SINA: Schoolsnet’s Internet Network Administrator Software Each school has a SINA administrator who have undertaken a two day SINA program. They are supported by a local Help Desk and data centremaintained by the CEOWA and the Editure Help Desk in Melbourne. Ongoing SINA Professional Development courses are provided with follow-up assistance from a listserver and the weekly SINA eBulletin.

  35. Students and teachers use a combination of the CathEdNet tools to communication and collaborate between schools on joint projects

  36. We have also used video conferencing and myclasses/myportfolio tools to discuss student work samples in order to make consistent judgements

Australian Catholic Education Network (ACENC) In October 2008 we will establish the ACENC using a customised version of the TLF protocol "Scootle" for all Catholic schools in Australia to access resources. The ACENC Contemporary Learning Working Group is aiming to collate and publish the following resources in 2008: 20 Models of Contemporary Learning designed to support the implementation of MCEETYA’s – Learning in an Online World Statement and Pedagogy Strategy. RE resources and then in 2009 add other learning area resources Access to the TLF learning objects and Learning Assets

Professional Development Programs • Two day SINA Administrator’s workshop • One day mydesktop Properties Professional Development Day • Three day myclassesprogram (two days beginner program and a one day advanced) • One day myportfolioprogram • One day Centra Desktop Video Conference PD • A one and two day IWB Workshops for Smartboards, Webster or Easiteach • We facilitate Primary and Secondary ICT Network Days each Term • Run ICT Skills Workshops eg Dreamweaver, Flash, Graphics, PowerPoint etc each term Each of these courses are delivered regularly in the Computer Lab at the Catholic Education Office, Perth. These programs are also available to teachers in the Bunbury, Geraldton and Broome Regions from visiting consultants.
