  2. 5 Traits of Writing • CONTENT What am I writing about? • GRAMMAR How am I writing it? • ORGANIZATION How am I ordering my ideas? • STYLE How am I presenting it? • MECHANICS How accurate is it? Your grade depends on how well you do all of these!

  3. Step 1: Brainstorm • Make a list of ideas • Free write on a topic • Create a web • Take notes (research paper) • Interview someone • List pros and cons

Step 2: Write first draft • Look at brainstorm • Organize ideas (number them) • Write a topic sentence • Write the body of the paragraph, putting supporting details, examples, reasons, etc. in an order that flows • Use transitional words/phrases: first, next, additionally, however, finally, etc. • Write a conclusion

  5. Step 3: Revise A. Content 1. Do I have sufficient details, reasons, examples, etc. to support my topic? 2. Are all sentences relevant to the topic? 3. Do I need to add/omit anything?

  6. B. Grammar 1. Are my verb tenses correct? 2. Do my subjects and verbs agree? 3. Have I used prepositions correctly? 4. Are my sentences complete? Any fragments? Run-ons? 5. Do I have any contractions? 6. Have I used correct word forms?

  7. C. Organization 1. Are my ideas organized? 2. Have I used transition words such as first, next, then, additionally, another reason, following this, in conclusion etc. 3. Do I need to move any sentences to a different place?

  8. D. Style 1. Have I repeated words or ideas unnecessarily? 2. Have I varied my sentence style? 3. Have I exaggerated any ideas? 4. Are my pronouns and references clear? 5. Have I used interesting yet accurate vocabulary?

  9. Step 4: Edit • Type first draft; follow correct format • Check for any mechanical errors and correct them E. Mechanics 1. Look for green and red lines – are they correctly indicating errors? 2. Do I have capital letters where needed? 3. Have I used correct punctuation? 4. Do I have any spelling errors? 5. Do I have any “typos”?

  10. Suggestions for Revise/Edit: • Read your typed copy aloud. You can often hear your own errors. • Have someone else read it aloud to you. • Have someone else look at your piece (peer editing). • Do NOT copy from Internet or someone else’s work! • Remember that good writers spend a lot of time revising and editing!!

Step 5: Final Copy • You are now ready to type your final copy • Make sure you have correct margins • Choose a standard font (Times New Roman, Calibri, another font that is clear and easy to read) • Type your name, class, date in upper left corner • Double space and type title (first letters in caps) • Double space, indent, and begin first paragraph • Double space and indent between paragraphs • Double space bar after each sentence • Reread Final Copy one more time
