  1. The Effects of Sleep Apnea on the Body

  2. What Is Sleep Apnea? Sleep apnea is a health condition in which your breathing is interrupted during sleep. As this happens, you wake up to resume breathing. Such multiple sleep interruptions don’t let your body get enough sleep, as a result of which, you feel extra tired during the day.

  3. Effects of Sleep Apnea • Sleeplessness is not the only effect of sleep apnea. If you don’t consult sleep doctors at the right time, the condition can lead to more chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and other long-term health risks.  • A lot of health conditions are linked to sleep apnea. These include high blood pressure and obesity.

  4. The Effects of Sleep Apnea on the Body Furthermore, many different systems in your body can suffer from the effects of these conditions when coupled with sleep apnea: • Respiratory system • Digestive system • Reproductive system • Endocrine system • Other systems

  5. Respiratory system • As your body is unable to get the required amount of oxygen during sleep, it can trigger the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. You will often feel breathlessness and have more trouble exercising than usual.

  6. Digestive system • People suffering from sleep apnea are more likely to have liver scarring, fatty liver disease, and higher-than-normal levels of liver enzymes.

  7. Reproductive system • According to sleep experts, the condition reduces your desire to have sex. Men can also suffer from erectile dysfunction and hamper their ability to have children.

  8. Endocrine system • Sleep apnea can hamper the body’s resistance to the hormone insulin. This condition is known as insulin resistance. As cells are unable to take in insulin, the level of blood sugar rises, and you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

  9. Other systems Some of the other common symptoms of sleep apnea include: • Sore throat or dry mouth after waking up • Headache • Irritability • Poor focus

  10. Sleep Medicine Expert • While sleep apnea can disturb your body and its systems, there are ways to control and treat the condition. Losing weight is an effective way to improve sleep apnea symptoms.  • Contact Sleep Medicine Expert @ https://www.sleepmedcenter.com/ or call @ 708.364.0261
