Statistical Consulting through the UCD Statistical Laboratory Or: How to stay on the Statistical “Straight and Narrow”
Why talk to a Statistician? • We can help you determine if your plans are overambitious • Chances are, we’ve seen many more experiments like yours than you have • When Murphy’s Law kicks in, we know more about your possible fallback positions • Experiments that don’t go as planned can present computational challenges as well • There are apt to be new statistical methods which arose since you took your survey course • We’re “nice folks”
Logistical Details • Soon to be located in the Mathematical Sciences Building • There are two Senior Statisticians: • Neil Willits (PhD, Stanford Univ.) • Jerry Braun (PhD, UCD) • To schedule an appointment: call/contact Nancy Cole (ncole@ucdavis.edu or by phone at 752-6096) • Bad news: backlogs can run 10 days to 2 weeks or more • We schedule phone appointments too (although there are limits to what can be accomplished by phone).
Logistics, ctd. We offer help with: • Design of experiments • Choice of analysis methods • Data base design • Choice and/or use of statistical packages • Data analysis (but not data entry, thank you) • Post hoc analysis • Interpretation of results • Reporting results • “Wrangling” with referees • (other stuff too)
Logistics, #3 • For UC affiliates, • First hour on each new project is free, excluding computations • Additional hours are charged at $68/hour. • For non-UC affiliates, • All time is charged at $98/hour. (Charges, etc. are subject to change with little notice, though no changes are currently anticipated.) Want a copy of this?? Write nhwillits@ucdavis.edu to request one.
