What just changed? Why? At the same time, a young lady crossed the street, passing him at the corner. The moment he looked into her eyes, he forgot who he was—Jimmy Valentine was transformed forever. The woman lowered her eyes and blushed slightly….She made her way across the street and entered …”The Elmore Bank.” Jimmy goes from a sneaky bank robber to a love-struck man who is trying to change his ways.

What just changed? Why? Mr. Ralph Spencer was like a phoenix that arose from Jimmy Valentine’s ashes. It was as if his entire past had burned away in a the sudden flame of love that Annabel Adams had kindled in his heart. He stayed in Elmore and prospered. He opened a shoe store… and secured a good run of trade. Socially he was also a success... He also accomplished the wish of his heart he met Miss Annabel Adams. Jimmy:

Group Extension: • Working as a class/small group read the text. Then apply the three steps to identify how the main character changes and why. Once you have gone through the process, record the change and why on a sticky note or in your reader’s notebook.
Individual Extension: • Using your independent reading book and the three steps, spot changes in the main character in your book and record them in your reader’s notebook or on a sticky note.
Based on what you have read so far in “The Reformation of Jimmy Valentine-Safe Cracker.” Identify one way Jimmy has changed and how your know.. Write a sticky note describing your ideas about how and why the main character changed.
