  1. Heredity The passing of traits from parent to offspring.

  2. Dominant Trait a trait observed when at least one dominant allele for a characteristic is inherited.

  3. Recessive Trait A trait that is apparent only when two recessive alleles for the characteristic are inherited.

  4. Genes Segments of DNA that carry hereditary instructions located on chromosomes and passed from parent to offspring.

  5. Alleles Alternative forms of a gene that govern the same characteristics.

  6. Genotype The inherited combination of alleles.

  7. Phenotype An organism’s inherited appearance.

  8. Probability The mathematical chance that an event will occur.

  9. Self-pollinating plant Contains both the male and female reproductive structures • Anthers: male structure that contains pollen • Stigmas: female structure that contains the ovary
