Sounding Out • Chunking– Looking for sound patterns eg. Ar; ch; st; ear • Using syllables or parts of words to quickly work out larger words • Taking word endings off • Small word inside is used to quickly identify word

Sounding Out • Sound out using long and short vowel sounds
Long/ Short vowel strategy: Readers figure out tricky words by trying different pronunciations. There was a huge animal in the back yard! Huge h / u / ge [ Short u – as in up] Huge h / u / ge [ Long u – as in blue] NB. Students only need to sound out to get a sense of what word might make sense, then try substituting the word to see if it makes sense. This is a faster strategy than sounding out the whole word.

An example of a reader using STRUCTURAL cue, standing The small cat was sitting quietly by the window. In this example, the substitution of standing for sitting follows the rules of language, and does not present a grammatical problem.
An example of a reader NOT using a STRUCTURAL cue sat The small cat was sitting quietly by the window. In this example, the substitution of sat for sitting creates a grammatical error and does not follow the rules of language.
Making Sense - Structure • Sentence concept – Using full stops to assist with phrasing reading/ making sense
Meaning Knowledge of topic/field, cultural understandings & life experiences to make out what makes sense The aboriginal flag is red, yellow and ...... Persuasive Report Genre In summer it is hot, in winter it is .... Vocabulary
Making Sense- Meaning • Read on - A later strategy is to read on past the word, or to the end of the sentence for extra clues to work out a word
Fluency • Reading to the end of a sentence, particularly to keep the flow of reading when it goes down to the next line • Using punctuation to make reading flow - Talk about • pausing at commas and fullstops briefly, to keep the meaning • and occasionally take a breath • Reading fluently in phrases rather than a jerky word by word style
Expression • Using the voice for characters • Sounding like a storyteller • Creating excitement and atmosphere
Most importantly – Good Readers are active readers!Checking and Self Correcting • Rereadto keep story flowing • Read on to get more clues • Checking sounds match an attempt at a word • Going back and working on word as soon as aware of error
