COE BEST PRACTICE • How to recover “update pending – reset required” error on a MFS5000SI compute module ? NEC ITPS
Environment/Requirement • Environment : • This document applied to compute module MFS5000SI remaining to a “update pending – reset required” after a firmware Update. • This document applied only when a clear cmos have been tried and was unsuccessful. • This document can only be applied to MFS5000SI Compute module • This document can only be applied on Flexpower V1 Firmware 6.x or to Flexpower V2 with Firmware V10.X. This cannot be applied on Flexpower V2 with Firmware 11x. • Requirement : • - Someone needs to be onsite since remote KVM is not available during recovery process. • A monitor needs to be connected to the compute module when performing this recovery : Remote KVM won’t be available in recovery files. • A USB Key formatted in FAT • Recovery files needs to be copied at the root of the USB Key
How to recognize MFS5000SI Compute Module? MFS5000SI Compute only have two USB Port On front side. It canbeequipedwithfollowing processor : Xeon 5400 Xeon 5300 Xeon 5200 Xeon 5100 NEC France - M Series Training - Software -
Update pending – Reset required error An error can happen on MFS5000SI compute module after a firmware. Compute module can remain with a “Updates pending – Reset required” status. Clicking on the “reset required link” will only reset the compute module and error message will come back In order to fix this issue a Bios recovery can be performed to clear this error and make sure Compute module comes back online with its new firmware.
Prior to Perform Bios recovery In order to allow the compute module to boot on recovery mode a jumper will need to be moved. • You’ll need to remove the Compute module from the chassis. • Remove Compute Module cover • - Change « J7A1 BMC Force Update » • From position 2-3 to position 1-2 to set the Force update to enable status. • Put back the cover on top of the Compute Module. • Re insert Compute Module in the chassis with the USB Recovery Key connected to the USB Port • ( at this stage Compute Module won’t be manageable anymore throught graphical interface)
Preparing the USB recovery key • Usb key must be formatted in FAT • - The three following files must be present : • - BIOS.cap • - iflash32.efi • - bios_upd.nsh • Those files must be copied at the root of the USB Key
Preparing the EFI Boot Now that Jumper has been moved to recovering mode, Compute Module has to be started. (sinceRemoteKvmis not availableyouwillneed to press front power button) Into the Bios Boot order will need to be changed so that [EFI Shell] will be first at boot.
Booting on EFI Once Bios option changed and compute module restarted the following EFI Promp will appear : At this stage USB key is already loaded automatically by EFI Shell
Executing the recovery Since USB key is automatically loaded please perform the following command “bios_upd.nsh” If command is not successful make sure recovery files are at the root of the usb key and that it is formatted in FAT
End of the recovery The following message will appear once recovery perfomed. Compute Module can be now removed again from the chassis.
Re inserting Compute Module • Jumper needs to be changed back into its original position before inserting compute module again • Recovery USB Key has to beremoved • Once inserted please bring Bios boot order to its original position. • Since recovery jumper is in its original position compute module can now be managed again within the graphical Interface.
Once Compute Module re-inserted • Once compute Module re-inserted two behavior can happen depending of Flexpower chassis firmware revision : • Compute Module is available once rebooted and can be used • Compute Module needs to be updated. Update is performed automatically and then it can be used. • To make sure of compute module status once inserted its status will need to be checked into the « firmware » section of Flexpower Graphical interface.
