Skills Audit Toolkit Linda McFall - Anniesland College Maggie Lennon - Bridges Programmes
Context • Bridges promotes social and economic integration through the workplace • Employer Engagement concerns about matching client and employer expectations around experience and competencies • Caseworkers need a reliable way of measuring a client’s knowledge against job and person specification • Clients need realistic assessments and signposting • Accountant or book-keeper?
Towards a solution • Competency and task lists from employers, sector skills councils and professional bodies • Manual checklists • This approach tends towards the deficit model of “what I can’t do” • Important that the next stage captures “what I can do, what I do know” and “what I can do realistically with this information”
Next stage • Collaboration between FE College, NGO and employers • Build toolkit, in the first instance, across sectors where there are most vacancies • Produce a toolkit at an appropriate language level (Intermediate) suitable for one to one, self access or group work • Provide extensive feedback at individual task level and overall job specification level
Next stage continued • Questions came from real job specifications from employers • Involve employers when designing the feedback • Part of European Project with 6 partners
Lessons Learned • Embedding project within an FE college allows onward progression to further study and up- skilling • Employer Engagement is crucial • Helps build confidence of clients unfamiliar with the UK labour market • Managing realistic expectations of clients and employers is key
