Categories of Reason • Starting point of reason. • Subject and predicates. • Each object has 9 categories or (predicates that can be applied to it) these predicates distiguish one object from another.
9 Categories • Quantity ( e.g. 6 feet tall) • Quaility (e.g. Articulate) • Relation (e.g. Father to Son) • Place (e.g. at the college) • Date/Time (last week, Feb. 1st) • Posture (standing) • Possession (gold, clothes, shoes, bag) • Action (teaching) • Passivity (learning)
Metaphysics • Aristotle considered Metaphysics to be “first philosophy”. • Dealt with basic questions of reality and existence.
Process of Change • The Four Causes: • Formal cause • Material cause • Efficient cause • Final cause
