First Experiments in the 100T Multi-Shot Magnet: Tuning Alloy Disorder in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors Scott A. Crooker & Nitin Samarth; Applied Physics Letters90, 102109 (2007) NHMFL-LANL & Pennsylvania State University The new 100T “Multi-Shot” magnet allows non-destructive access to ultrahigh magnetic fields. Importantly, its relatively long pulse duration permits high-resolution optical spectroscopy. The field profiles from eight separate pulses are shown in at left. Zn.70Cd.22Mn.08Se quantum well In the first experiments performed in the 100T Multi-Shot magnet , we studied the field-tunable alloy disorder potential in a single diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum well. As spins align, the magnetic alloy disorder potential changes. This disorder is directly revealed by the photoluminescence (PL) linewidth, G. See raw PL data at right. 60T Long-Pulse 100T Multi-Shot Above 70 T, we observe that G markedly increases, in qualitative agreement with a simple “local-bandgap” model of compositional alloy disorder (dotted line shows the theoretically-predicted linewidth).
