  2. Today’s Outcomes • Increase knowledge of Learning Power professional development opportunities in math, science, and English • Build an on-ramp for initiating Learning Power Pre-AP within districts

  4. Overview of learning power pre-ap initiative • Outcomes • Participants will: • Gain a big picture view of the Learning Power Pre-AP initiative. • Learn about the nuts and bolts for getting started with the initiative. • Participate in Q & A about the initiative.

  5. How did we get here? • Learning Power leaders sought additional funding opportunities to develop South Dakota’s capacity for meeting the needs of high-level learners. • USED awarded Advanced Placement Incentive Program (APIP) grant to TIE for engaging eligible SD school districts in Pre-AP and AP program development. • Today is the launch of the Pre-AP initiative involving 17 SD school districts in a three-year professional development activity.

  6. Goal of learning power pre-ap initiative • To build the capacity of educators for providing rigorous, relevant curriculum and instruction in grades 7-12 mathematics, science, and English content so more students are prepared for participation in AP coursework.

  8. Summer Institute – July 21 - 24, 2009 • Black Hills State University Campus • Teachers from content areas come together to work with TIE Content Specialists, Laying the Foundation and CAMSE • Focus starts with the middle school years • Science – Grades 6 through 9 • Math – Grade 6 through Algebra 1 • English – Grades 6 through 10 • Need upper level content teachers as we align/design rigorous curriculum which prepares students for AP courses

Summer Institute – July 21 - 24, 2009 • Black Hills State University Campus • Learning Power Pre-AP provides and funds: • Four-day Summer Institute • Lodging as needed, two educators per apartment • Meals • Mileage • $600 stipend AND three graduate credits upon completion of Summer Institute and follow-up activities • Courseware and materials

  11. Spring AP Conference • April 18-20, 2010 • Sioux Falls • Learning Power Pre-AP funds: • Registration • Lodging • Mileage • Meals

  12. Tuition and usf Credit • Want college credit? • If you will be attending all three days (Sunday through Tuesday), you are eligible to take the TIE Conference for graduate credit. • If you choose to do so, Learning Power will cover University of Sioux Falls tuition expenses BUT you will need to register with June following our session!

  13. Travel Reimbursement If you travelled in a school vehicle, you will need to complete a separate voucher with the school district info in the Name and Address sections (see back of voucher).

What’s My District Doing? • Use the handout provided: • Reflect upon the status quo, the needs, the challenges, and the goals your district might have as it strives to meet the needs of high-level learners. • Either complete the handout electronically (and send me a copy at jpreszler@tie.net) or complete TWO handouts and give me one, please.

  16. LTF is Only A beginning! • As we all know—knowing the strategies isn’t enough • District-wide commitment ultimately a key to success • The need for vertical curriculum alignment • BUT “Baby Steps” to start—we are in our infancy

Draft Agreements and Intent to participate DRAFT AGREEMENTS ONLY!—Finalized agreements will be provided at the summer training. • Please complete Intent to Participate document. • If you check the “to participate” option, also list the content areas that will be represented from your district at the summer training.

Important Upcoming Dates • Upcoming events require that we’ll need team names and roles • Please provide names of team members who will be attending the Summer Institute so that we can finalize lodging and meal arrangements. • By May 15, send names to mmcgirr@tie.net. We will send you a reminder. • Summer Institute: July 21-24 at BHSU.
