The first Roman aqueduct : Aqua Appia • Completed in 312 b.C., it was built during the second war against the Samnites • 16.5 km long, itstartsnear Via Prenestina, flows underground and goes towards the Aventine and Celio • It has been rebuilt in various periods. The last timeitwasrebuiltbetween 11 and 4 b.C., by the EmperorAugustus
Anio Vetus • Builtbetween 272 and 270 b.C., in part itisaboveground, in partsitruns on twolevels • Ittakes water from the River Aniene, near Tivoli, at a height of 850 m abovesealevel • Itcarries 2.111 litres per second and ends at Esquilino Hill
Aqua Marcia • First aqueductaboveground, built in 144 b.C., byPraetor Marcio • Itisabout90 km long, itisendowedwithbridges and canals. • Itcarriesabout 251 litres per second
Aqua Tepula • Itwasbuilt in 126 b.C. by censors G. ServiliusCaepio and L. Cassius Longinus • Its source was on the Alban hills, running only a mere 18 kilometers till it reached Rome • The water from the Aqua Tepula, as implied in the name, was tepid and lukewarm, not fit for human consumption
Aqua Iulia • It was built in 33 b.C. by Agrippa, and expanded by Augustus between 11 and 4 b.C. • The springs of the Aqua Iulia are situated approximately a half-mile north of the abbey of Grottaferrata, and it ends near Porta Maggiore • The water supply was estimated to be 48,000 m3 during a 24-hour period
Aqua Claudia • Aqua Claudia wasbegun by EmperorCaligula in 38 a.C. and finished in 52 a.C. • Itis 69 km long, brings water from Subiaco and, likeAquaIulia, endsitscoursenear Porta Maggiore • Itdeliveredto the city about 180,000 cubicmeters of water per day
AnioNovus • AnioNovuswasbuilt in the sameperiod of Aqua Claudia, by Caligula, and itwas the longestaqueduct, withitslenght of 87 km. • Ittookits water fromriverAniene, bringing 196.627 cubicmeters of water per day, and ended in Porta Maggiore, likeotheracqueducts
AquaTraiana • Thisaqueduct, builtby Traiano in 109, drewits water fromthe Bracciano lake • Itwas57 km long and brought 118,200 cubicmetersof water per day up toGianicolo, on the other side of the River Tevere. • Itwasdestroyed by enemies and rebuiltas “Aqua Paola”
AquaAlexandrina • AquaAlexandrina, the last of the mostimportant Roman aqueduct, wasbuilt in 226 a.C. under the reign of Alexander Severus in the III century AD • Itisn’t very long, only 22 km, and broughtfrom 120,000 to 320,000 cubicmeters of water per day (depending on the season), from Pantano Borghese to the Terme Alessandrine, near the Pantheon.
