All About the Nose • No two people smell the same odor the same way. In other words, a rose may smell sweeter to some people than to others. • The average human being is able to recognize approximately 10,000 different odors. • Our sense of taste is greatly influenced by our sense of smell. • Your sense of smell is least acute in the morning; our ability to perceive odors increases as the day wears on. All About the Ear • In the course of hearing, sound waves enter the auditory canal and strike the eardrum, causing it to vibrate. • Sounds that are 85 decibels or louder such as heavy traffic, a noisy restaurant, a screaming child, or a lawn mower can cause hearing damage • Once you have lost your hearing it’s gone! All About the Tongue • There are approximately 9,000 taste buds on the tongue. • Your tastes will change as you get older. Your taste buds will become less sensitive. • The appearance of the tongue is often an indication of body health; a pinkish-red color is normal. In impairment of the digestion and in certain feverish diseases, a yellowish coating forms. • Taste is the weakest of the five senses. Menu
All About Touch • While your other four senses (sight, hearing, smell, and taste) are located in specific parts of the body, your sense of touch is found all over. • Your sense of touch originates in the bottom layer of your skin called the dermis. • The nerve endings in your skin can tell you if something is hot or cold. • Pain receptors are probably the most important for your safety because they can protect you by warning your brain that your body is hurt! • There are about 100 touch receptors in each of your fingertips.
