Natural Events That Upset the Stability of the Ecocolumn: • Births • Low food supply • Death • Build up of bacteria
Natural Disturbances to Ecosystems • Births and deaths • Plants die or are eaten • Volcanoes • Earthquakes • Lightning • Fire
Human-made Forces Disturbing the Stability of Ecosystems: • Pollution such as pesticides, fertilizers, nuclear waste, garbage and exhaust fumes. • Pollution is the condition that results when pollutants interact with the environment. • 3 common pollutants are: acid rain, road salt and fertilizer.
We will duplicate human pollution in a class ecosystem study using: • Vinegar to simulate the effect of acid rain. • Kosher salt to simulate the effect of road salt. • Fertilizer.
It is time for a pH test!! • You will be given two liquids: A and B. • Using strips of pH paper, determine what happens when the paper is dipped in each liquid. • Which liquid represents the pH of acid rain?
Jigsaw Activity: • Each group will be assigned a reading selection about a common pollutant. • You must report back to the class about your pollutant.
Questions to answer in your presentation: • What is the pollutant? • Where does the pollutant come from? • Why is your pollutant a problem for natural ecosystems? • What can we do about the problems your pollutant causes?
