What is Assistive Technology • Is any device or service that helps a student with a disability to meet his/her IEP. • Helps overcome physical barriers • Improves function performance
Law in Regard to Assistive Technology • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) – states that it is the school system’s responsibility to provide assistive technology to students with disabilities. • Assistive Technology Act (Tech Act) - provides people with disabilities a level playing field with other members of their community.
Law in Regard to Assistive Technology • Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act – schools are required to integrate academic, vocational and technical training to staff to increase the quality of programs offered.
Assistive Technology Examples Hearing Impaired FM systems – teacher wears a transmitter while the student wears a receiver. The system uses radio frequencies to amplify the voice of the teacher.
Assistive Technology Examples Seeing Impaired Screen Reader – computer software that reads to the user what appears on the screen.
Assistive Technology Examples Learning Impaired Audio Books – these can greatly increase student confidence and reading ability. Especially for students who struggle visually but excel in auditory learning.
Assistive Technology Examples Physically Impaired Eye Tracking – allows people to speak or write messages by looking at predetermined phrases.
