  4. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION • Merritt Academy is split into 4 buildings. The closest to the road is the oldest building (original building). It houses our Pre-school program and also has a small aux gym. The MS & Elementary are split between two huge 10 classroom portables which are located behind the old pre school building up front. The largest building in the back of the school is the high school. This building is less than 12 years old and houses the main office, the gym, and our entire HS population. On the grounds we have a playground, Football/Soccer Field, baseball diamond, and a large open area. There are two parking lots, one on each side of the property which allows for drop off and pick ups.

NEW HAVEN, MI • Had a foundry and other local businesses in the 1980s, most of these buildings are now in poor condition and residents do not work in town. • New Haven is minutes from I-94 and Gratiot making commutes easier on working parents. • Most businesses are now located along Gratiot Ave. • New Haven is in a rural area but has a suburban feel to it. It is the most urban of the surrounding areas. • MAJOR RAILWAY RUNS THROUGH THE TOWN, that is how it became a settlement.

LOOKING AHEAD…. • 40-50 new students per year…Lottery to see who gets those spots? • More community health initiatives? • Adding onto the HS building (2014) 4 new classrooms. • Building new athletic facilities (Baseball, Football, etc) for future growth. • Class sizes must stay at 25, which means we will need to add staff as we grow. • Parent involvement- look for ways to increase it.

Community Partners • New Haven Medical Center- for immunizations and health screenings. • City Council- for help with growth and planning for future expansion. • Our unemployment rate is higher than county and state averages. Find ways to help struggling families and get parents the jobs they need!
