Thesis Smoking in public should be banned because of the health problems from second-hand smoke, the negative kid influence, and the impact it leaves on the environment.
What Is Second Hand Smoke? • A mixture of gasses and fine particles that include smoke from a burning product
Methods of Smoking Diseases caused by smoking • Cigarettes • Marijuana • Hookah • Cigars • Pipe Smoking • Lung Cancer • COPD • Strokes • Emphysema • Reproductive Effects In Women • Diabetes • Pneumonia • Asthma • Bronchitis • Heart Disease
How Are Kids Affected? • 90% of adult smokers started when they were kids • Studies have shown that children whose parents smoke are much more likely to smoke themselves • The attraction to kids: to look cool, act older, seem tough or feel independent
What Does It Do? • Most commonly discarded piece of waste worldwide • 1.69 billion pounds of butts wind up as toxic trash each year • Globally, 4.3 trillion cigarette butts litter the earth every year • US accounts for 250 billion butts • UK accounts fro 200 tons • Australian smokers litter more than 7 billion butts every year
Did It Hurt Businesses? • Many businesses thought it would hurt their business because they’d lose money • Creating a smoke free environment helped the businesses • “The Peanut Barrel” in Michigan thought for sure its doors would close, when instead it became a family friendly environment and made more money than ever before
Conclusion • Overall, it’s a good idea for the government to keep the public smoking ban in place • Second hand smoke harms children and adults, and the only way to fully protect nonsmokers and our environment is to eliminate smoking in all homes, worksites, and public places.
