  2. What is it? • Solar power is the sun’s energy which has absorbed in to dark coloured plates and converted to heat or electrical energy. • Solar energy is a renewable source of energy.

  3. Solar cells • The solar cell or photovoltaic cell is a device which generates electricity directly from visible light. • A solar panel is made of many solar cells which usually have a total output of 12V

  4. Crystalline cells. • There are two types of solar cell. These are mono crystalline and poly crystalline. • These are wired in series to produce solar panels • As each cell produces a voltage of between 0.5 and 0.6 Volts, 36 cells are needed to produce an open-circuit voltage of about 20 Volts. This is sufficient to charge a 12 Volt battery under most conditions. • The output from a solar cell is at its greatest when the light hits the cell at right angles.

  5. Structure • Cover glass • Transparent glue • Anti reflective coating • Silicon and gallium arsenide conductor layers to generate current flow

  6. Advantages • Solar cells are silent and have no moving parts • Cause no environmental pollution in operation • Never run out • Can generate power where it is needed, without the need for electricity pylons and wires. • Are not unsightly
