Newton’s Laws of Motion Forces
Sir Isaac Newton • Newton was born in England on December 25, 1643, the same year that Galileo died. He lived for 85 years. Isaac Newton was raised by his grandmother. He worked his way through college. While at college he became interested in math, physics, and astronomy. • While in college, Newton wrote his ideas in a journal. Newton had new ideas about motion, which he called his three laws of motion. He also had ideas about gravity, the diffraction of light, and forces. Newton's ideas were so good that Queen Anne knighted him in 1705. He died in 1727.
Force • Push or a pull • Force is a vector • As learned earlier this means that force has both magnitude and direction • Forces can be • Contact – objects are physically touching • Forces at a distance – objects don’t touch
A Newton is abbreviated by a "N." To say "10.0 N" means 10.0 Newtons of force. • One Newton is the amount of force required to give a 1-kg mass an acceleration of 1 m/s2.
Types of Forces • Gravitational – caused by mass of two objects • Weak Nuclear – involves nuclear decay • Electromagnetic – Interaction between electric & magnetic fields. • Strong Nuclear – Keeps the atom together
Mass • Fundamental measure of the amount of matter in the object • The quantity of matter in a body regardless of its volume or of any forces acting on it. • Unit kilograms, kg
Mass is not… • Weight • The term should not be confused with weight, which is the measure of the force of gravity acting on a body
First Law of Motion • An object at rest remains at rest unless acted on by an outside force and an object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted on by an outside force. • Law of Inertia

2nd Law of Motion • Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. • Force = mass x acceleration F = ma
2nd Law of Motion • Mike's car, which weighs 1,000 kg, is out of gas. Mike is trying to push the car to a gas station, and he makes the car accelerate 0.05 m/s2. Using Newton's Second Law, compute how much force Mike is applying to the car.
3rd Law of Motion • For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action.
3rd Law of Motion • The rocket's action is to push down on the ground with the force of its powerful engines, and the reaction is that the ground pushes the rocket upwards with an equal force.
