Phytoplankton assemblage shift: Five weeks of sampling in Monterey Bay revealed differences in the types of phytoplankton inhabiting the bay; dinoflagellates were dominant in 2005, while diatoms were dominant in a similar study in 2002. (M. McManus) Zooplankton: M. McManus and Van Holliday are working on acoustic data (TAPS) from Monterey Bay. “Five weeks of sampling in Monterey Bay during summer 2005 showed significantly lower zooplankton biomass compared to 2002.”

Larval Fish (subtidal monitoring) In the Santa Cruz region, nearshore monitoring of rockfish recruitment showed a failure of recruitment of OYB complex (blue, black, boccacio, widow, olive, yellow). This information compliments offshore trawl surveys by NOAA which likewise showed extremely low numbers of larval rockfish. The later-season recruiting KGB complex (Kelp, Gopher, and Black-and-Yellow rockfish) were observed, suggesting that the impact from the warm water event was not cross-cutting across all rockfish species. Carr, UCSC) In Santa Barbara region, there was likewise a failure of recruitment by the OYB complex- however, in contrast to the Santa Cruz area, NOAA surveys indeed found larval rockfish offshore. This may mean that offshore abundances are not being translated to inshore kelp forests. (J. Caselle, UCSB)
To Do: • finish assembling nearshore time series through fall 2005 (OCNMS, HSU, others?) • quantify phytoplankton assemblage and zooplankton abundance estimates from Monterey Bay • quantify PISCO measurements of larval fish recruitment
