  1. Christina’s cell diary All About Cells

  2. Definitions • Cell Wall: The hard, transparent outer covering of a plant cell, made up mostly of cellulose and surrounding the cell membrane. This helps keep the cells form. • Cell Membrane: The thin membrane that forms the outer surface of the protoplasm of a cell; plasma membrane. • Nucleus: A mass of specialized protoplasm found in most plant and animal cells, without which the cell cannot grow and divide. The nucleus controls growth, cell division, and other activities, and contains DNA, a nucleic acid which passes on the genetic characteristics of the cell.

  3. Definitions • Vacuole: A membrane-bound cavity within a cell, often containing a watery liquid. • Cytoplasm: The living substance or protoplasm of a cell outside of the nucleus. • Ribosome: Organelles (the smaller parts of a cell) that produce proteins. • Mitochondria: The powerhouse of the cell where the energy is released from food. • Chloroplasts: Organelle within the cell where photosynthesis takes place.

  13. What is DNA & Where Is It Found? • DNA is Deoxyribonucleic acid. It is a self-replicating material that is present in nearly all living organisms. It is the carrier of genetic information. DNA is found in the nucleus of a cell. As we know, a cell is very small and organisms have many DNA molecules per cell, this means that the DNA has to be tightly packaged. When the DNA is ‘packaged’ it is called a chromosome. • When the DNA is being replicated, it unwinds so that it can be copied. When it unwinds it looks like a twisting ladder. DNA is what gives new cells genes. Genes are what make up a living organism.
