Phonograms • What are phonograms? • A phonogram is a single letter, or a fixed combination of two, three or four letters, that is the symbol for one sound in a given word. • English has 70 phonograms • These phonograms represent the 45 basic sounds used in speaking

Spelling and Marking • Always underline multi-letter phonograms • Always put a small number above the phonogram when it doesn’t say it’s first sound • Always write rules that apply at the end of the word • Rule 4 – vowels at the end of a syllable usually say their long vowel sound • Rule 17 - usually double the l, s or f at the end of a one syllable word • Rule 26 – always capitalize a proper noun • Rule 6 – use y not i at the end of an English word • Always break the word into syllables
