Experiments • What are some safety rules when doing experiments? • What should you do if you burn yourself when using a bunsen burner? • Why do we wear safety glasses when doing experiments?
Experiment: Chemical Reactions You will be doing 7 mini experiments. In your book put the heading above. For each of the small experiments put a new subheading. At each station read and follow the instructions carefully. In your book write your observations and answer any questions on each work station.
Steel Wool and Copper Sulfate • Add 20mL of copper sulfate solution to a beaker. • Put a small amount of iron wool into a beaker. • What happened to the iron wool, write this description in your book. • Is this a physical or chemical change? • What are the signs?
Marble Chips and Acid • Put 5 small marble chips into 1cm depth of acid in a test tube. • Record the reaction.
Carbonate and Vinegar (acid) • Vinegar is a weak acid. • Dissolve a level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in 50mL of water. Is there any reaction taking place? • In another beaker add 50mL of white vinegar. • Then tip the bicarbonate solution into the beaker with the vinegar. • Observe the reaction, is this physical or chemical.
Chalk and Acid • Grind a small amount of chalk in a mortar and pestle, use small motions. • Measure 50mL of water in a measuring cylinder add this to a beaker. • Add this powdered chalk to beaker of water. • Is there any reaction taking place? • Pour a small amount of acid into a beaker and add some chalk mixture to this. • Is there any reaction taking place?
Magnesium and Acid • In a test tube add a small amount (5 cm) of hydrochloric acid. • Add a small strip of hydrogen to this test tube. • Is there a chemical reaction taking place? • What are the signs of this? (feel the test tube)
Sodium Sulfate and Barium Chloride • On a dropper plate add 3 drops of sodium sulfate and 3 drops of barium chloride. • Observe the reaction, what are the signs of the chemical reaction?
Burning Magnesium • Light a Bunsen burner using the correct method. • Using tongs to hold a small strip of magnesium near the flame. • Describe the reaction • What are the signs a chemical reaction has taken place.
