  1. DSRC Application Layers – IEEE P1609 T. M. Kurihara IM P1512 WG Meeting August 22-23, 2004

  2. ISO TC204 WG16 CALM M5 Architecture

  3. P1609 PROJECTS • P1609.1, Resource Manager • P1609.2, Application Services • P1609.3, IP Network Services • P1609.4, Medium Access Control (MAC) Extension Services • [Vehicle Safety Data Dictionary/Message Sets (SAE)]

  4. IEEE P1609.1 Scope • Create a modified version of the Resource Manager standard originally defined in IEEE Std 1455-1999 • Maintain consistency with ISO 15268:2002, DSRC Resource Manager and the ISO TC204 WG16 CALM M5 • P1609 Resource Manager supports DSRC applications using the IEEE 802.11a communication technology

  5. IEEE P1609.2 Scope • Create an Application Services (Layer 7) standard for 5.9 GHz DSRC applications • Support several protocol stacks, including one representing traditional DSRC systems, TCP/IP, and streaming audio/video • Describes interfaces with the lower layer standards being developed by ASTM

  6. IEEE P1609.3 Scope • Create a standard that defines interfaces between these multiple communication stacks and the lower layer services of ASTM 2213-02 (IEEE 802.11a R/A), soon to be included in the program of work of IEEE 802.11p Task Group • Support multiple protocol stacks, one for the traditional DSRC, one for streaming audio/video, and another for TCP/IP • The North American DSRC Architecture is evolving

  7. IEEE P1609.4 Scope • Create a standard for the Media Access Control Extension sub-layer (Layer 2) that defines interfaces between these multiple applications and communication stacks that interface with ASTM 2213-02 (IEEE 802.11a) • Interface with the public safety applications community through National Public Safety Telecommunication Council (NPSTC) • NPSTC cooperation is expected to result in potential use of the ITS Radio (DSRC) by ITS and public safety

  8. IEEE DSRC DD/MST • Scope to update the Data Dictionary and Message Set (DD/MS) definitions in IEEE Standard 1455-1999 • Make DD/MST applicable to 5.9 GHz DSRC standards • Review and respond to changing DD/MS as a result of the IEEE Data Registry project • Auto manufacturer vested interest in on-board vehicle safety messages prompted SAE request to sponsor project – in process

  9. Automotive Multimedia Interface Collaboration (AMI-C) • Demonstration of V2V capabilities using DSRC telematics services • One of the drivers together with the Vehicle Safety Communications Consortium to complete ITS DSRC family of standards completed to meet demonstrations and on-board vehicle safety capabilities • Also need to assure appropriate response to FCC rule-making for ITS 5.9GHz radio spectrum use and for NHTSA safety initiatives
