  2. Científico • En las plantas con flor, el fruto es el conjunto del ovario maduro y todas las demás piezas florales. En sentido botánico, se llama fruto sólo al ovario maduro.

  3. Coloquial • En términos coloquiales, la palabra suele usarse sólo para describir los frutos suculentos y comestibles de las plantas leñosas, los de matas y arbustos, como el tomate o el melón, y algunos otros más pequeños, como la fresa o la frutilla.

  4. En condiciones naturales, el fruto suele formarse una vez que ha tenido lugar la fecundación del óvulo, pero en muchas plantas, casi siempre variedades cultivadas, como los cítricos sin semilla, la uva, el banano y el pepino, el fruto madura sin necesidad de fecundación; este fenómeno se llama partenocarpia.
