Ourregion: Catalonia • Catalonia is in the North-east of Spain • Its surface is about 32106 Km² • It has about 7.5 million inhabitants • In Catalonia there are two official languages: Spanish and Catalan • The capital city of Catalonia is Barcelona • La Generalitat de Catalunya is the government of our region • Catalonia is divided into 4 provinces and 41 councils.
A briefhistory of Catalonia • In the course of history many different people have lived in Catalonia: Iberian people, Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Romans, Germanic civilizations, Muslims. • The origins of the region were established in the Middle Age. • Catalonia lived its best moments in the Middle Age when the Aragon crown dominated different territories in the Mediterranean sea (Balearic islands, Sicily and Greece)
Catalan symbols • The officialflag of Catalonia is “La senyera” • The patronsaint of Catalonia is Saint George • The fourredstripes of theflagsymbolizetheblood of count Guifre El Pelós’ fingers. • The nationalhymn is “Els Segadors” • The nationalday is on 11th September.

Curiosities • One of the typical dishes are snails. • A typical catalan drink is Sangria. • In Saint George festival (23th April) is boys give a rose to girls as a present and girls give a book to boys. • Two typical Christmas caracters of Catalonia are “el cagatió and el caganer”.
