Radiation PowerPoint Presentation By Julie Shooshanian
Outline 5 types • Alpha Emission • Beta Emission • Positron Emission • Electron Capture • Gamma Emission
Alpha Emission Alpha emission is when an atomic nucleus emits an alpha particle transforming it into an atom and the atomic mass decreases by four and the atomic number by two. • http://lhs.lps.org/staff/sputnam/chem_notes/alpha.gif • 23892U -> 23490Th + 42He
Beta Emission • Beta emission is when a beta particle is emitted and the weak nuclear force is transformed from a neutron to a proton while it emits an electron. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Beta-minus_Decay.svg
Positron Emission • Positron Emission is a form of beta decay (known as beta plus) which is when a proton goes into a neutron and spits out a positive charge. http://physics.unco.edu/sung/sci103/nuclear/positron_decay.gif
Electron Capture • Electron Capture is when an electron is drawn into the nucleus and combines with a proton to create a neutron and the atomic number decreases by 1 and the atomic mass stays constant. • Example: • http://education.jlab.org/glossary/electroncapture.html
Gamma Emission • In Gamma Emission the Nucleus changes from a high energy state to a low energy state when a high energy photon is emitted. • http://www.lbl.gov/abc/wallchart/chapters/03/3.html • http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/docs/physics/u8b3phy.html
Conclusions • Alpha emission- atomic mass decreases by 4, atomic number decreases by 2 • Beta Emission-energy converts a proton into a neutron • Positron Capture-proton is converted into a neutron • Electron Capture-atomic number decreases by one, atomic mass stays constant • Gamma Emission-nucleus goes from high energy to low energy
