What do I want to ACHIEVEorCHANGEas a result of this session?
ILL Permanent White Water (Vaill, 1996, Covey, 2006)
The Constants • Change • Choice • Principles (Covey, 2006)
The Constants Change
Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing themselves!
“If you want to see change… …be the change you want to see”
The Constants Choice
The Constants Principles
The main thing is to keep the main thing the MAIN THING!
Thriving in Challenging Times Part 1 -Stories
Stories are universal & the same stories appear all over the world Stories are wired into our unconscious mind We turn to stories to help us make sense of things & for comfort and inspiration We often re-write the same stories Importance of Stories
Epic Myths - then and now Frankenstein Jaws King Kong Romeo & Juliet Bonnie & Clyde Natural Born Killers Star Wars Lord of the Rings Harry Potter
Stage 1:Hearing a Calling Being pulled in a new direction – change & crises can be a calling! Stage 2:Accepting a Calling Confronting a threshold or boundary in your existing abilities or view of the world. Stage 3:Crossing the Threshold Moving into new territory which forces you to grow & to find support & guidance. Stage 4:Finding a Mentor or a Guardian Obtaining the right support & guidance. Stage 5:Facing a Challenge or ‘Demon’. Things which you have learn to contend with or accept. Stage 6:Transforming the ‘Demon’ Developing a new skill or discovering a resource. Stage 7:Coming Home Creating a new map of the world to incorporate the growth & discoveries you have made on your journey.
Stage 1. What was the calling you heard? Stage 2. Why did you choose to accept it - did you have a choice? Stage 3. Describe the new ‘territory’ you entered / are entering. Stage 4. Who provided / will provide support / guidance? Stage 5. What challenge or ‘demon’ did / will you have to contend with? Stage 6. How did you ‘tame’ or transform’ the ‘demon’? Stage 7. Having ‘come home’ what do you know about yourself and the world that you didn’t know before?
Thriving in Challenging Times Part 2 -Strengths
A strength is: Talent A natural way of thinking, feeling, behaving x Investment Time spent practicing, developing your skillsand building your knowledge base = Strength The ability to consistently provide near perfect performance Talking about your Strengths
S T R E N G T H A ‘superhighway’ of neural activity
What is it like to be you when you’re operating a strength? What would a colleague/your boss notice about you? What do you notice in your body? What do you notice your mind doing? What do you believe to be true? What goals are you trying to achieve? What happens to those around you? What is the difference you make in terms of: Your Strengths in Action (i) Self, (ii) Team, (iii) Organisation & (iv) Service Provision / Patient Care SF
