Help from AFP Code, • AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards amended in Fall 2007 to include businesses • Seven new standards relate to how business members interact with charities and their responsibilities to their clients • Use as a base to establish institutional culture

Ethics in a Positive Light • Ethics is the foundation of fundraising. • No more “can’t” or “won’t” • Positive language that accentuates the safeguards charities put in place • Ethics empowers donors to make good giving decisions
Ethical Decision-Making at the Personal Level • Mediation, relaxation, exercise • Take your pulse; ask others about your leadership choices • Professional coaching; mentor others • Listen to the voice and the guts • Case studies in safe places • Use AFP/ other codes & resources as training materials for PD workshops
Ethical Decision-Making at the Organizational Level • Encourage Board adoption of AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards • Adopt Donor Bill or Rights/ IC Code at Board level and train on a regular basis • Remember – uphold public trust and protect your personal and institutional reputations
