Totalitarianism . If you are hungry, broke and there is no sign of hope. What would you do to fix the situation you are in. What if you have a family, Children are starving to death? Would you give up freedoms? Right to vote Right to free speech Right to make money and keep it.

  2. If you are hungry, broke and there is no sign of hope. What would you do to fix the situation you are in. • What if you have a family, Children are starving to death? • Would you give up freedoms? • Right to vote • Right to free speech • Right to make money and keep it

  3. What if a leader promised to fix the situation and did? • Would you follow him • What if he hurt others but your family is left alone. Remember he is the reason your family has food to eat.

  4. Totalitarianism • When a leader has complete control over his people and country. • Why would people support this style of government? • Hard Times • Fear • Easy

  5. Bento Mussolini • Italian dictator (another word for Totalitarian Leader) • Came to power in 1922 • Promised a new era of greatness for Italy • Formed a style of government known as Fascism

Fascism • A form of government that says that the nation is the most important factor in a persons life • The nation is number 1 • A nation is made of originally one race of people • They believed that Immigrants are impure and weaken the Country, therefore they must be gotten rid of • Everything you do should benefit the country the most and not you

Fascism • Fascism is violent • Fascism seeks change in society • Any opposition to Fascism must be dealt with quickly and severely • No freedoms because freedoms equal options • The only option in fascism is to follow the leader • Their can only be one leader and he must guide the nation to greatness by any means necessary • Other nations and races are not as good/weak and are viewed as a waste of space • Only strong countries/races should be allowed to live- Survival of the Fittest

Hitler’s Rise to Power • Germany • Treaty of Versailles ended WWI • The Treaty ended the War on a few conditions • Germany accept sole blame for WWI • Germany pay money (reparations) for the cost of the war to France and Britain • An realistic amount of money • A portion of these reparations were owed each year • A league of nations formed to prevent wars from ever breakout again • Germany must give up a massive amount of land (resources: coal, oil, iron) to break its economy • Germany could not have a navy/air force and can only maintain a small army for defense

  13. Germany’s Economic Collapse • Germany could not afford its payments to France/Britain • France insisted that these payment MUST be made

  14. Germany unable to Make Payments, not enough money Germany prints Money Money Becomes Worthless People Starve and Become Desperate Hitler Promises Big Changes and Becomes Ruler

  15. Hitler's Plans For Germany • Massive Government Works • Rebuild Up Military • Build up Industry • Get rid of reparation payments to France/Britain • Reclaim German land lost after WWI • Punish those who gave up on Germany during WWI

Hitler Rise To Power • 1933-1938 • Hitler successfully rebuilds Germany • Germany becomes an economic powerhouse • Jews find themselves highly persecuted • World views Hitler as………..a hero • Hitler begins rebuilding military in violation of Treaty of Versailles • Britain, France, US do nothing • Should we have made this an issue? • Hitler begins reclaiming German territory lost after WWI by: • Military Power • Britain, France, US do nothing • Should we have made this an issue?

  18. Hitler • 1938-1941 • Hitler invades Poland, formerly a part of Germany • Britain and France declare war on Germany to defend Poland • Enough is Enough • WWII starts-1938

WWII • Germany quickly sweeps across France and baldly defeats Britain and France • France is Conquered • Britain is beaten so baldy it will be unable to attack Germany for 3 years • Britain is never Conquered though • Hitler conquers the rest of Europe with the exception of the Soviet Union (Russia) • Hitler does not worry about America • He views us as a small nonthreat

Communism • The Government owes everything and gives to each person the minimum requirements in order for that person to survive • Every person is supposed to be an equal partner in the government • I Own your house, you own mine. • We share all available resources • Communisms purpose is so that everyone is equal

  22. Communism in The Real World • One person is the absolute leader of the country • Instead of their being: Poor, Middle Class, and Rich there is only the Poor • The Leader is extremely wealthy because everything: money, land, material goods, and other resources are at his disposal

Stalin • 1920s-1930s • He ensures that he is the sole leader of the country by killing: • Christians • The Educated • The Middle Class and the Rich • Land owners • Capitalist • His Family • Those who believed in Democracies • Those who helped him gain power • Communist Party Leaders • The Military Leaders of the Soviet Union • Many others

Stalin • Motivation • Wants to make the Soviet Union the largest of the World Powers • Remember that he is in sole control of the Soviet Union therefore if the Soviet Union is the most powerful country in the world he is the most powerful man in the world • He makes a pact with Hitler to guarantee their two countries will never fight against one another • Why would Hitler and Stalin want this Pact

  25. Hirohito • Hirohito ruled peacefully for 20 years until 1932 when Japan became a military dictatorship

  26. 1918-1932 • Emerged from WWI with strong economy • Began making democratic reforms • Hit hard by the Depression • Military Dictatorship takes control

  27. Japanese Goals of the 1930’s • Revive economy hit by Depression • Lead economic modernization in Asia - hoping to one day rival Europe and the United States • Free Asia from western colonial influences • Set up “East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere” • Dominate Asia economically and militarily
