Minimum Graduation Requirements • 18 Credits in Grades 9 - 12 • At Least 4 ½ credits each year • Fulfill Athletics & Health Course • Pass Swim and Water Rescue Test • Required school-sponsored Community Service Project for seniors
Distribution of Credits • Finish graduation requirements before 2nd term senior year • Strongly recommend no more than 3 AP or Honors courses during any given term • Once enrolled at Hopkins, students may not use outside credit in Art, English or Science towards fulfilling the departmental graduation requirements
Academic Term Load • Each Term • Minimum number – at least 4 courses (excluding Health and non-AP Art courses) • Maximum number – no more than 5 courses (excluding Health and non-AP Art courses) Exemptions require special permission.
Pass/D/Fail Option • For Grade 12 students only • May take one year or term course pass/D/fail • Graduation requirements excluded • Student cannot rescind his/her decision • Cut-off Date: Friday of the sixth week of the term
Honors Courses • Offered in Language and Mathematics • Honors designation appears as part of title on transcript • Students receive no “bump up” in grade • If enrollment is less than 4, courses will run and meet twice weekly
Independent Study • Advanced study beyond scope of curriculum • Eligibility restricted to Grade 11 and Grade 12 students • Requires willingness of faculty member to serve as project adviser • Not designed to accommodate those with scheduling conflicts • Details on pp.6-7
Senior Projects • Projects run from Spring vacation through end of May • Graduation requirements cannot be dropped for senior project • School will not make schedule changes to accommodate the senior’s project

Outside Programs • Students need to submit a minimum of 2 course selection forms • Students need to meet with Dean of Academics to review program of study • After decision is made to attend, parents need to apply to Head of School for official Leave of Absence

Art Courses for Senior School • Refer to chart on p. 13 • Many of the art courses are offered both terms • Correction to Course Guide: Term I Music Theory [Fundamentals] is not an AP course • AP Music Theory [Advanced Topics]: next offered in 2009 – 2010 • Year courses: All Music Performance classes, Advanced Studio, Fine Art Studio I and II

Advanced Visual Arts • Four year sequential program: • Studio Art I • Fine Art Studio I – formerly called Advanced Studio • Fine Art Studio II – formerly called Fine Art Studio I • Fine Art Studio III – formerly called Fine Art Studio II Although not recommended, it is possible to enter the program at any stage with departmental approval.
Classics • Both Latin and Greek fulfill the language requirement • 3rd year of language requirement must be completed at Hopkins during the academic year • Greek I - IV offered – no AP exam given in Greek
Classics • Latin III course prepares for SAT II • Non-AP Latin IV course offered • Two AP courses: AP Latin Vergil followed by AP Latin Literature
Computer Science • Two Electives • Programming in Java • Term I • Covers 1st half of AP (A) curriculum • Prerequisite: Math 14 and departmental approval • AP Computer Science A [Programming in Java II] • Term II • Covers 2nd half of AP (A) curriculum • Prerequisite: Programming in Java I
English • Grade 11 • Term I: The Writing Semester • Term II: Elective • Grade 12 • Term I: Shakespeare elective • Term II: Elective
English • Students must select 3 choices and be comfortable with all three • Changes in English electives are never permitted once the course is underway • English Department strongly discourages students from taking American Literature electives in both 11th & 12th grade • Option of taking two English courses concurrently requires departmental approval

Modern Languages • Modern Language sequence shown on p.41 • AP courses offered in Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish • May request accelerated section on course selection form • Departmental approval required for accelerated or AP courses • 3rd year of language requirement must be completed at Hopkins during the academic year

AP Science Courses • Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science • Departmental approval required • Courses meet 7 times in two weeks, four 55 minute classes, three 80 minute labs
Science • Departmental requirement is 2 credits • Biology required along with either Chemistry or Physics • Departmental approval required for Accelerated and AP courses • Accelerated Chemistry and Physics have both math and science prerequisites • AP and Upper Level Electives have a required evening lecture series
Scheduling Process • Course selection forms are due to adviser on Friday, February 15. • Fill out entire form • Summer Study Proposal Form due by June 12. • Request accelerated and honors sections - even if student is already enrolled in one; department will make final decision.
Scheduling Time Table • March 14 – April 4: Master Schedule created • April 14 – May 2: Returning students scheduled • May 5 – May 30: Conflicts with student schedules resolved • June 19: Student courses sent home with grades • July 1: Deadline for all schedule inquiries • No requests for changes in Term I English electives will be honored after July 1
