Dynamics of BiopolymersAlexei P. Sokolov, University of Akron, DMR-0315388 Using the knowledge accumulated in the field of Polymer Dynamics we studied the role of solvents in biomolecular dynamics, activity and stability. • We demonstrated that the dynamic transition that ignites the biochemical activity is solvent driven and appears at the same temperature range for hydrated biological macromolecules regardless of their chemical and 3-D structure. • By changing hydration, we were able to identify the dynamic process that is directly connected to enzymatic activity. Sharp increase in <x2> appears at the same T regardless of structure of the hydrated bio-molecules.
Dynamics of BiopolymersAlexei P. Sokolov, University of Akron, DMR-0315388 Education: Under this grant, three students, G. Caliskan, Y. Ding and J.H.Roh have completed their PhD. Two more graduate students, B. Begen and A. Macy, and one REU undergraduate student, G. Burg, have been actively involved in the research. Outreach: Our group is involved in teaching school students through the Science Fair and the University of Akron Math and Science Upward Bound Program for disadvantaged students. We also work with the Akron Global Polymer Academy to assist K-12 science instruction via distance learning and personal interaction. Dr. Sokolov works with students from Copley-Fairlawn Middle school (CFMS), in particular, helping them with preparation for Science Olympiad. The team from CFMS won regional competition and became 7th in the State of Ohio in 2006. These are the best achievements ever for this school.
