Classic DR vs WSB vs OSSR • Classic Windows DR works, but not supported by MS • Supported by MS until 10/2009. • See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/249694 for details • NetWorker Disaster Recovery guide has been updated for NW 7.6 SP1 • New section “Special MS recovery procedure” contains updated DR procedure for AD and cluster • Avamar 5.0 introduce OSSR support: Offline System State Recovery • NetWorker support for OSSR is scheduled for NW 7.6 SP2
WSB: Windows Server Backup • For NetWorker only • Currently only way of doing a Disaster Recovery supported by Microsoft for Windows 2008 • Technical note available on PowerLink for DR with WSB and both NetWorker or NMM
OSSR: Windows Offline System State Restore • Uses customized WinPE image with embedded NW client to perform ASR procedure. • Recover of the complete system files from the image without anything installed on the recover host • Same procedure will be used by both NW and Avamar • If used, PXE server needs to be on the same network segment as the backup server • Boot image is/will be available for download on Powerlink • uEFI based systems are not supported
OSSR: Windows Offline System State Restore cont. • New saveset is introduced on NW: DISASTER_RECOVERY • Full backup of critical drive needed by NW • Full System backup needed by Avamar • For NW, double amount of data backed up once in DISASTER_RECOVERY, once C:\ • Same applies to Avamar but data since data is de-duplicated, it is not noticeable. • Recovery UI will open after booting up WinPE image • Need to enter specific info and once done reboot the host
