Pre – Trip planning: Where to Start? • Determine Date, Location and Time • Acquire required permits if necessary • Determine the number of participants for the specific trip • Identify which paddlers within the chapter that are appropriate • Assess paddler capabilities relative to water levels, hazards and weather
Pre – Trip planning • Determine how many volunteers are needed • 1:1 or 2:1 Ratio Preferred • Contact participants and volunteers regarding the trip and finalize total number of paddlers • Determine paddling equipment needs
Pre – Trip planning • Coordinate transportation needs • Transportation to and from trip location • Shuttle logistics • Transportation of paddling equipment • Communicate with participants/volunteers regarding • Meeting time • Location • Transportation/carpool/shuttle logistics/equipment
Importance of Utilizing a Trip Manifest • Provides participants personal contact information as well as emergency contact information • Helps to determine participants paddling ability relative to the trips difficulty, hazards and weather • Provides specific paddling equipment needs for each participant

On-Water Safety • Create an on water Emergency Plan • Emergency contact information • Emergency communication devices; cell phone, spot tracker, satellite phone • Ensure someone who is not present on the trip knows of the trip location and estimated time of arrival back home
Safety and Risk Management • Determine volunteers / safety boaters role prior to trip • Communicate trip and individual paddlers goals/objectives • Facilitate a “Safety Talk” prior to being on the water; • Proper fit of helmets and PFD’s • River Signals and Communication • Paddler swimming position • Self-Rescue and throw rope education • Description of potential river hazards
On-Water Safety • Identify lead and sweep boaters; communicate the importance of remaining in between identified boaters • Communicate to participants about proper spacing between paddlers during the trip • Communicate with participants/volunteers about the Emergency Plan • Ensure other paddlers know where the emergency communication devices are located as well as the individuals emergency contact information
