  1. Welcome to Year Three Sketty Primary School

  2. Settling into school • We hope that your child has already settled into the new routines, and they are happy with the day to day organisation. • The children are now becoming aware of the increasing expectations. • We aim to support and nurture them in developing their own individual skills and talents.

  3. Autumn Term • During the Autumn term the children study “ Children of the Revolution.” life in Victorian times • They will be going to Big Pit on Thursday to see what life underground was like in this period. • The children will also find out about conditions for children in Victorians times at work and in the home .

  4. Spring Term During the Spring Term the children will undertake a topic entitled Disaster Zone This topic is geography based and will incorporate work on weather around the world. .

  5. Summer Term • This term the focus of study will be a science based topic. We will compare and contrast two different localities, the woodland and beach. • We will be visiting Port Eynon and Ilston Woods to look at the wild life, plants and trees that are found there.

  6. Other weekly features • Your child has a weekly Games/ PE session. They require suitable PE kit, which can be left in school. This will be on a Monday - black shorts and white t shirt and for outdoor games warmer gym clothes and trainers • There is a weekly spelling test on a Friday where the children will be tested by their partners on individually generated lists. Spelling patterns will also be taught. Spelling Journals.

  7. Reading • We will be developing your child’s reading skills throughout the year. We aim encourage a love of books and want the children to enjoy reading, providing the opportunity for them to experience a wide range of texts. • Your child has a Reading Journal which acts as a dialogue between school and home, where reading at home can be recorded.. • Your child also reads in a weekly group reading session with the teacher . • The interactive white board and IPads also encourage reading through many other subjects throughout the day.

  8. Research shows that reading with a child is the number one thing that we can do to help prepare them for success in future reading and learning.

  9. National Literacy Trust 2016 At 14 children who enjoy reading have been found to have an average reading age of 15.3 years compared to only 12 years for those who don’t enjoy reading.

  10. Reading Partners We are looking for any parent or grandparent who could spare 30 mins a day on a regular basis to hear readers. It would be from 9.00 am to 9.30 am. We would be very grateful. Please let us know.

  11. Maths • We want your child to be confident independent and resourceful in mathematics. • Maths is taught every day • Children will be taught in ability groups but the groups are flexible and will change during the year. • Children will be expected to know their multiplication facts by the end of the year.

  12. Please could you label School uniform Fruit boxes Lunch boxes PE kit PE bags School bag Water bottles Also could you please practise tying shoe laces with your child.

  13. Homework • Practise times tables • Regular reading recorded in the Reading Journal • Spelling test practice • Home school tasks throughout the year which we would appreciate your help with. These tasks are designed for parent and child to work together. • Maths – “Active Learn,” games allocated each week which will be related to the topic studies that week. • Bug Club books

  14. Hwb – this is the platform given by Welsh Assembly Government for children to access work they have started in school at home.

It is private way of contacting the teacher, not the whole class! • Writing a comment in your child’s red Reading Journal. • Phone the office to make an appointment to see the teacher. • Come to meeet us in the yard before school.
